Zero-click Search

Definition

A zero-click search is a search query where the user's need is satisfied directly on the search results page — through a featured snippet, Knowledge Panel, calculator, or AI Overview — without clicking through to any website.

Zero-click searches have grown significantly as Google has expanded SERP features. When a user asks "What is the capital of France?" or "How many ounces in a pound?", Google answers the query directly on the results page. The user gets the answer and leaves without clicking any result — making a visit to any website unnecessary.

Main sources of zero-click results:

  • Featured snippets: A direct answer extracted from a web page, shown in a box above organic results
  • Knowledge Panels: Facts about entities pulled from Google's Knowledge Graph
  • AI Overviews: AI-synthesised answers launched by Google in 2024, which have substantially increased zero-click rates for informational queries
  • Calculators and converters: Instant results for mathematical or unit-conversion queries
  • Local pack: Business information shown directly without requiring a click

Impact and strategy: Zero-click searches reduce organic CTR for informational queries. Rather than fighting this trend, a practical response is to:

  • Target transactional and commercial-intent queries where users need to visit a site to complete an action
  • Optimise for featured snippet placement to gain brand visibility even on zero-click queries
  • Build brand recognition through consistent SERP presence — even zero-click impressions familiarise users with your brand
  • Focus content investment on queries where users genuinely need to read more than a one-line answer
