SERP (Search Engine Results Page)

Definition

A SERP is the page a search engine displays in response to a query. Modern SERPs contain organic results, paid ads, featured snippets, image packs, and AI-generated overviews, each competing for user attention.

Every time a user types a query into Google or Bing, the engine returns a SERP. The exact layout depends on the query — some trigger a featured snippet at the top, others show a local pack, a video carousel, a People Also Ask section, or an AI Overview.

Key SERP features:

  • Organic results — the ranked list of web pages determined by the algorithm
  • Featured snippet (Position Zero) — a direct answer extracted from a web page, shown above organic results
  • People Also Ask (PAA) — expandable Q&A boxes pulled from various pages
  • Local pack — a map with 3 local business listings, triggered by location-intent queries
  • AI Overviews (AIO) — AI-synthesised answers at the top of the SERP, launched by Google in 2024

Why SERP position matters: Click-through rate drops sharply with position. The #1 organic result typically receives 25–35% of clicks; #10 receives around 2–3%. Appearing in a featured snippet or AI Overview can dramatically change these dynamics.

What SearchVitals tracks: The Rankings module tracks keyword positions in the SERP over time, showing rank changes, position history, and which SERP features a keyword triggers.
