SEO Glossary

Referring Domains

Definition

The count of unique domains that contain at least one backlink to a given site, as distinct from the total number of backlinks.

Referring domains counts unique linking domains rather than total links — ten links from one domain count as one referring domain, not ten. It's generally treated as a more meaningful authority signal than raw backlink count, since links concentrated on a single domain are a weaker, more easily manipulated signal than the same number of links spread across genuinely independent sites.
