Entity SEO

Definition

Entity SEO is the practice of optimising a website so that search engines and AI systems recognise and correctly classify the real-world entities — people, organisations, products, places — that the site represents or covers.

Search engines have shifted from matching keywords to understanding entities — distinct, identifiable things in the real world. Google's Knowledge Graph, for example, contains billions of entities and their relationships. When Google recognises that a page is the authoritative source for a specific entity, that page benefits from elevated trust and can appear in Knowledge Panels, entity-based featured snippets, and AI-generated answers.

Core entity SEO tactics:

  • Schema markup: Use Organization, Person, Product, LocalBusiness, or WebSite JSON-LD to explicitly declare what entities a page is about and their attributes (name, URL, logo, social profiles, identifiers)
  • Consistent NAP: For local businesses, Name, Address, and Phone number must be consistent across the website, Google Business Profile, and third-party directories
  • Wikidata / Wikipedia presence: Entities with Wikipedia articles or Wikidata entries are easier for Google to classify and link to its Knowledge Graph
  • SameAs links: Use the sameAs property in structured data to link your entity to authoritative external sources (Wikipedia, Wikidata, Crunchbase, LinkedIn)
  • Topical authority: Consistently publishing content on a well-defined topic cluster signals to AI systems that a site is an authoritative entity for that domain

Why it matters for AI: AI answer engines rely heavily on entity recognition to attribute facts to sources. A brand or author that is a well-defined entity in the AI's knowledge base is more likely to be cited accurately.
