SEO Glossary

Canonical Tag

Definition

An HTML element that tells search engines which version of a page is the preferred ("canonical") one to index.

A canonical tag (rel="canonical") is an HTML element placed in the <head> that signals to search engines which URL is the master copy of a page. It prevents duplicate-content problems when the same or very similar content is reachable from multiple URLs.

Common uses include consolidating tracking-parameter URLs, HTTP/HTTPS or www variants, and paginated or faceted pages.
